The Wedding Shoe Game - when it works and when it doesn’t

If you’re a couple who loves to laugh and don’t take yourselves too seriously, The Wedding Shoe Game is an easy way to inject a bit of fun and personality into your wedding reception. Even better, you can control how cheeky it gets!

Liz and Craig played the game at their wedding reception in 2017, and as you can see, it involves each of the couple sitting back-to-back holding one of their own shoes, and one of their partner’s shoes.

The MC, DJ, or a special quizmaster appointed to lead the game then fires off a list of questions at the couple, such as:

Who is messier around the house?
Who said “I love you” first?
Who is bossier?
Who is the better kisser?

The answer isn’t given out loud, rather, each of the couple raises the shoe of the person they think is messier, bossier, or the better kisser et cetera. Sometimes, the answers will be the same, sometimes the answers will be different, and ALWAYS your guests will come away with some surprising (and often hilarious) insights into your relationship.

It’s also a gimmick that can get old pretty quick, so I recommend coming up with a list of around 20 questions, allowing 10 minutes in the reception to get it done, before launching into something like the cake cutting or bouquet toss.

Of course, there are circumstances where The Wedding Shoe Game might not be a good fit. If one, or both, of the couple have had a lot of alcohol to drink, or if you touch on a sensitive subject, what might start out as light-hearted fun may cut a little too deep. Conservative loved ones may feel confronted by risque questions, or by answers they might think are overly critical, even if it causes no offence to the couple themselves.

At the end of the day, the decision is yours as a couple, because you’re the only ones who really know your relationship, your guests, and your vision for your big day!
